Defense Minister and presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has seen his lead widen in the latest opinion poll as many of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s supporters move from backing Prabowo’s main rival former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo.
An Indikator Politik Indonesia survey, released on Sunday and conducted from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1, found that Prabowo had a 12.8 percentage point lead over Ganjar compared with the previous survey in mid-October when Prabowo and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka had yet to register their candidacies.
Prabowo’s personal electability rating grew by 3.6 percentage points from 37 percent in mid-October to 40.6 percent in late October, while Ganjar of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) nosedived from 34.8 to 27.8 percent. Former Jakarta governor Anies now trails Ganjar, albeit with his popularity rising slightly from 22.3 to 23.7 percent.
The survey interviewed 1,220 respondents of voting age nationwide and had a margin of error of 2.9 percent with a 95 percent confidence level.
The survey took place after the game-changing ruling issued by the Constitutional Court, led by then chief justice, and Jokowi’s brother-in-law, Anwar Usman that effectively enabled Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran to run as Prabowo’s running mate. The ruling triggered a wave of condemnation of apparent efforts by Jokowi to build his own political dynasty, ahead of stepping down from the presidency next year.

The survey also showed that when it came to the various pairings, Prabowo-Gibran remained the frontrunner with 39.7 percent, followed by the pairing of Ganjar and Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD at 30 percent and Anies and National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin Iskandar at 24.4 percent.
