Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan has identified fertilizer shortages as the root cause of the nation's agricultural problems.
Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan promised to improve the nation’s management and distribution of fertilizer during a campaign stop in Karawang regency, West Java, on Monday, as he cited fertilizer shortages as the root of problems in the agricultural sector.
"I say there are three problems in agriculture: one, fertilizer; two, fertilizer; three, fertilizer," Anies said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He considered the fertilizer issue a common problem in a number of regions of the country and said that even Karawang, known as a productive grain-producing region, was not exempt from fertilizer shortages.
“We want to secure the supply of fertilizer for farmers. Then, price of unhusked rice will improve," he said.
Anies also proposed a program that would allow farmers to make purchase contracts with buyers that guaranteed the offtake and price of what they produced.
"They can farm with peace of mind because they know someone will buy it. Jakarta implemented this when I oversaw Jakarta," he said.
On Nov. 29, Anies also expressed similar sentiments while campaigning in Pangalengan, Bandung regency, West Java, on his second day on the campaign trail.
