Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo has urged the government to control the rising prices of essential items ahead of the peak Christmas and New Year season.

"I repeat, Bulog [state-owned food logistics public company] must take over again," Ganjar told reporters, while campaigning in Pasar Baru in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the current system was “very liberal” in which the market had dominant control over prices.

“The state must regain its power on prices, and the government must control them.”

The former Central Java governor mentioned two other aspects the government needs to work on to address the issue of rising food prices.

First, there should be stability in production by utilizing data. Second, there should be mechanization and the incorporation of technology to maximize productivity.

After visiting the market, Ganjar held a meeting with the regional campaign team, candidates for the regional legislature and volunteers, followed by lunch.
