Aceh's governor coordinated with the UNHCR about the relocation of Rohingya refugees in Aceh.
cting Aceh Governor Achmad Marzuki said that he had coordinated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) regarding the handling of Rohingya refugees who landed in Sabang city on Weh Island, Aceh.
“We coordinated with the UNHCR regarding the relocation of the Rohingya refugees. We also told them to prepare the location,” said Achmad in Banda Aceh, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday.
On Saturday, 139 Rohingya refugees landed on the coast of Ie Meulee beach, Suka Jaya district in Sabang city.
Previously, 219 refugees landed in Sabang city on Nov. 21 at 11 p.m. These refugees were then relocated to a shelter in Lhokseumawe city.
Achmad said the relocation of Rohingya refugees was carried out according to regional capabilities.
“We are also continuing to build communication with the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration [IOM] to take part in the immigrants’ relocation process in Aceh,” he said.
“The Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister and the Law and Human Rights Ministry also wrote to us in search of a solution to handle this issue.”
