Presidential hopeful Anies Baswedan’s campaign team said on Thursday that he and his running mate Muhaimin Iskandar, if elected, would seek to strengthen corruption eradication efforts by increasing rewards for whistleblowers.
“This is one of the steps to eradicate corruption,” said Bambang Widjojanto, a member of the Anies-Muhaimin campaign team, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Bambang, also the founder of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI), said that reforming the whistleblower program was crucial to ensure close monitoring of state officials.
Bambang added that the candidate pair had developed several strategies to combat corruption.
The campaign team had researched the United States’ whistleblower system, where individuals could receive up to US$279 million for successfully recovering funds from corruption cases exceeding $1 billion.
Hamdan Zoelva, former chief justice of the Constitutional Court and current head of the Anies-Muhaimin campaign team, shared more details regarding the hopefuls’ plan for involving citizens in corruption eradication efforts.
“Citizens who report corruption with complete data, [if the ensuing case] is proven in court, are rewarded with money at [the rate of] 0.2 percent per billion [rupiah],” he told reporters on Friday, as reported by Kompas TV.
