Presidential candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo spent the third week of campaigning by reaching out to vulnerable groups, such as disabled people and laborers, as well as small-scale farmers and fishermen, while their rival camp visited interfaith communities.

Anies attended on Friday a discussion in Bekasi, West Java, held for a community of people with disabilities in the Greater Jakarta area.

Speaking in his opening remark at the event, Anies said the government needs to do better in bringing about “equality” for the disabled community.

“There needs to be equality, equality of opportunities and equality of facilities. These are all basic things that, if done well, will realize the potential [of the disabled community],” Anies said, as quoted by Kompas.com.

He said that he would implement more inclusive policies should he be elected into office next year, including making a handbook for construction companies so they build disability-friendly public spaces and facilities.

Ganjar of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) took his campaign trail to West Java to canvas for support among the province’s small-scale farmers and fishermen.

West Java has traditionally been a reliable source of votes for Prabowo in previous elections but has seen a growing bloc of electorate shifting to Anies, who is widely seen as an antithesis of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, whose son Gibran is Prabowo’s VP candidate.
