Gibran calls for a peaceful campaign after TNI soldiers assault Ganjar supporters.
Vice presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka has called on all supporters to act responsibly and avoid using noisy exhaust pipes, locally known as knalpot brong, on their vehicles.
"In short, everyone should stay safe. If you want to campaign, do it peacefully. Just don't get provoked," said Gibran during Car-Free Night in Surakarta, Central Java, on Monday, as quoted by detik.com news portal.
Gibran was commenting after a violent incident involving supporters of rival candidate Ganjar Pranowo in Boyolali, Central Java, last week.
The Military Police Detachment (Denpom) IV/4 Surakarta has named six soldiers from the Boyolali-based B Rifle Company of the 408/Suhbrastha Infantry Battalion as suspects in an assault on the supporters.
The battalion itself is headquartered in the neighboring Sragen regency.
At around 11:19 a.m. on Saturday, several of Ganjar’s volunteers arrived near the B Rifle Company’s base in a motorbike convoy with modified knalpot brong, after a campaign event.
The crowd allegedly provoked the soldiers by revving their engines in front of the Army base.
