Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan addressed the need for meticulous planning in the execution of Indonesia’s energy transition during an event held with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) on Thursday.
Pointing out that energy transition implies shifting from the use of fossil energy to clean energy, Anies said that it was imperative to consider workers whose livelihoods were dependent on non-clean energy sectors.
"What we need to consider is not only developing green energy, but also to protect those who are now working in the non-green energy sector,” Anies said, as quoted by kompas.com.
Anies emphasized that the transition to green energy must be carried out carefully, while taking into account the impact of the transition on individuals.
Citing the example of the country’s various toll road construction projects, Anies pointed out that some projects failed to consider possible consequential impacts.
"Our experience in constructing toll roads along the coast has shown that we did not adequately consider the transition from non-toll to toll roads. As a result, many restaurants and hotels suffered, as we failed to contemplate the shift," he remarked, as quoted by cnbcndonesia.com.
Anies stressed that, in formulating policies, the government should engage various stakeholders in crafting a comprehensive road map to minimize the potential adverse effects.
