The visit came only days after East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa officially announced her decision to join the campaign team of the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka presidential ticket.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Monday flew to East Java to start a working visit to the province, one of two battleground provinces in this year's presidential election.
The visit came only days after East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa officially announced her decision to join the campaign team of the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka presidential ticket.
Jokowi took off from Halim Perdanakusumah Air Base in East Jakarta aboard the presidential aircraft, which earlier last week transported the President to three ASEAN countries for an overseas trip.
"The presidential aircraft Indonesia-1 carrying the President and his entourage arrived at 7:40 a.m. local time," the Presidential Palace said in a press statement on Monday.
Together with Central Java, East Java is a battleground province where presidential candidates are expected to get the bulk of their votes.
East Java is also the stronghold of the country's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama, which has played a key role in swaying voters’ preferences in multiple elections.
Jokowi's visit to East Java came in the wake of his tour of Central Java in the latter part of 2023 and earlier this month, which observers deemed to be a way to shore up support for Prabowo.
