Hearing the wages teachers of early childhood education received, presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo promised he would address the low pay if he were elected as Indonesia’s next president.
Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo promised to improve the quality of life for teachers at early childhood education centers (PAUD) by increasing their salaries.
Ganjar made this promise during a dialogue with members of the Batang regency PAUD teachers' association in Reban district, Batang, Central Java, on Tuesday.
During the event, one of the representatives of the teachers' association shared the challenges PAUD teachers faced.
There were three problems the representative raised to Ganjar: the nonformal status of PAUD teachers, the budget allocation for the welfare of the teachers and the teachers' wage, which only amounts to Rp 600,000 (US$38.39) per year.
Hearing this, the former Central Java governor said the situation was unfair for PAUD teachers.
"Their salary is Rp 600,000 per year. I believe this is very unfair," Ganjar said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Ganjar apologized to the PAUD teachers, saying that he should have paid more attention to teachers’ welfare during his tenure as Central Java governor. He promised that he would try to increase the wages of PAUD teachers were he elected as president.
