The General Elections Commission (KPU) has appointed two female journalists to moderate the fourth 2024 presidential debate, deviating from the usual male-female pairings in the previous installments.

The televised fourth debate is slated for Sunday, held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan, Central Jakarta. It will be the second event to feature the three vice presidential candidates: National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD.

Sunday’s debate will cover topics related to energy, natural resources, food, the carbon tax, agriculture, the environment and indigenous communities.

During a meeting with campaign teams and broadcasters on Wednesday, the election organizer settled on appointing television journalists Retno Pinasti and Zilvia Iskandar to moderate the debate.

Their appointment marks the first time that a debate will be moderated by female journalists. Since at least the 2019 election, the KPU has always appointed a male-female journalist team in election debates.

The female journalists were picked solely based on their competence and experience by the debate broadcasters: SCTV, Indosiar and Metro TV.

“The broadcasters recommended competent figures who have expertise in moderating a debate,” KPU commissioner August Mellaz said on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
