Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo said public officials participating in the 2024 general elections must resign from their current positions, during a campaign event in Magetan, East Java, on Friday.

The former Central Java governor said that having public officials participating in the election increased the risks of power abuse and impaired their job performance, since they could not fully focus on fulfilling their responsibilities.

"If they [the public officials] do not resign, there is a possible risk of an abuse of authority and power. That is something we worry about," said Ganjar, as quoted by liputan6.com news portal.

“My suggestion is for them to resign because it will make things fairer.”

He denied accusations of targeting specific individuals with his comment, saying that it applied to all active public officials.

"It is only proper to resign if they are active public politicians. Perhaps, including Gibran, Mahfud, Imin and Prabowo because they are still active in their current roles,” he said.

“It is just me and Anies, who are inactive right now.”
