Family members join candidates on campaign trail

While their efficacy at winning votes is uncertain, family members on the campaign trail could help candidates project a good image, one analyst says.

As the end of the 2024 general election campaign period approaches, the families of the presidential and vice presidential candidates have remained a notable presence on the campaign trail as they pitch in to help woo voters.

Family members of presidential candidate Anies Baswedan, including his wife Fery Farhati Ganis and daughter Mutiara Annisa Baswedan, have been actively participating in a number of his campaign events, including one held over the weekend in Ternate, North Maluku.

Fery and Mutiara have also been campaigning individually, making appearances at in-person discussions and on online talk shows to discuss issues such as parenting, women’s empowerment and mental health as they make the case for Anies and his running mate Muhaimin Iskandar.

The families of candidates on the same ticket have even joined forces on occasion. Anies’ son Mikail Azizi Baswedan and Muhaimin’s daughter Rahma, for example, participated together in a discussion event involving young people, farmers and homemakers from Banyumas and Cilacap in Central Java.

“We’re going to relay your complaints to our fathers,” Mikail said at the Jan. 17 event, as quoted by Antara.

Rahma has also been actively campaigning for her father on TikTok. She often posts videos of Muhaimin’s daily activities, including one where the vice presidential candidate appears to be studying for the Jan. 21 electoral debate.
