The Ganjar-Mahfud and Prabowo-Gibran campaigns have been intensifying their efforts to woo voters in the key battleground province of Central Java, with the former fighting to stay in the race and the latter aiming for an outright victory.
As the campaign season enters its final stretch to the polls on Feb. 14, presidential candidates Ganjar Pranowo and Prabowo Subianto have been doubling down on their canvassing efforts in the battleground province of Central Java.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has been intensifying its outreach to defend its home base, while the campaign team of Prabowo has been making concerted efforts to win over voters in the province.
Although Central Java is the home province of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, whose eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka is the Surakarta mayor and Prabowo’s running mate, the PDI-P remains confident it will come out on top in the polls in the province, its traditional base.
“Insyaallah [God willing], Central Java will remain the bull’s cage,” PDI-P senior executive Puan Maharani said on Friday, referring to the party symbol in response to reporters’ questions about the rival campaigns in the province.
Puan, who is seeking reelection to the House of Representatives, has also hit her own campaign trail in the province over the past week, meeting local residents and joining homemakers at morning exercise sessions while encouraging them to vote for Ganjar.
A viral photo shows Puan and Bambang Wuryanto, who heads the party’s Central Java branch as well as the PDI-P campaign team, at a local stall sharing three bowls of bakso (meatball soup) in a nod to Ganjar’s ballot number, No. 3.
