The NasDem Party advocates for the adjustment of the threshold to seven percent, arguing that this would improve the decision-making process at the House of Representatives.
The NasDem Party has proposed adjusting the parliamentary threshold to 7 percent, highlighting the current composition of nine party factions in the legislature as optimal for decision-making.
The party's recommendation stems from the perceived lack of significant differences between contesting political parties.
"In terms of ideology and programs, almost every party is the same. There is no rigid distinction," House of Representative’s NasDem member Sugeng Suparwoto said on Wednesday, as quoted by tempo.
As a bid to address the lack of diverse opinions in the legislature, Sugeng suggested that political parties merge with others that have similar ideologies and ideas to minimize wasted votes.
NasDem's recommendation came following a Constitutional Court order that mandates an adjustment of the 4 percent threshold before the 2029 general election.
Still, despite the party’s advocacy for a higher threshold, Sugeng said that Nasdem would respect the final ruling.
"If it can't be 7 or 5 percent, the point is that we will still appreciate [the final ruling]," he said.
