portion of the Bogor-Ciawi-Sukabumi (Bocimi) toll road near the Parungkuda toll gate in Sukabumi regency collapsed on Wednesday evening in a rainfall-induced landslide, prompting a partial closure of the road.
The landslide reportedly dragged down three vehicles on the toll road and left two people with minor injuries, both of whom were taken to the Sekarwangi General Hospital in Cibadak.
“The incident affecting multiple vehicles at the Bocimi toll road is suspected to have been caused by a landslide because of high rainfall from afternoon to evening,” said West Java Police chief spokesman Sr. Comr. Jules Abraham Abbast, as quoted by kompas.com.
The incident occurred on section II of the Bocimi toll road, which is nearly 12 kilometers long and cost Rp 3.2 trillion to build. It was inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in August 2023.
PT Waskita Toll Road, the parent company of the Bocimi toll road’s operator, PT Trans Jabar Tol, said it believed the landslide was caused by water-induced erosion from heavy rainfall in the area. As a precaution, the section of the toll road from Parungkuda to Ciawi had been temporarily closed.
"The security around the area and at the Parungkuda toll gate has been tightened to anticipate any vehicles entering from Jakarta, Bogor or Sukabumi into that lane," Waskita Toll Road corporate secretary Alex Siwu said, as quoted by Antara.
Sukabumi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Tony Prasetyo said one of the injured passengers was found conscious and had been able to provide information. The victim had a leg injury and had to be carried to an ambulance for conveyance to the hospital.
