he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto on Monday in relation to the search for former party member and graft fugitive Harun Masiku.
Hasto was questioned for 1.5 hours but said the questioning was cut short when an argument broke out between him and the investigators.
According to Hasto, the dispute occurred after KPK investigators called Hasto’s personal assistant into a separate room, searched him and confiscated Hasto's phone and bag, which his assistant had been holding.
"I complained about the confiscation because, as far as I know, it was against procedures,” Hasto told reporters shortly after the questioning. “The investigators at the time had not yet questioned me about the facts surrounding [Harun's alleged bribery] case, but because of the incident I decided to resume my questioning another day.”
But the KPK said it had a warrant for the confiscation, kompas.com reported.
Hasto's lawyer Ronny Talapessy said Hasto had no knowledge of Harun's alleged bribery case and accused the KPK of unfairly targeting the PDI-P secretary-general ahead of the November simultaneous regional elections.
"Hasto has testified in court regarding Harun's alleged graft case, and the court found that he was not involved in the case. Despite this, the allegation about Hasto's involvement in the case always gains traction whenever he criticizes the government," Ronny said.
