ndonesia’s celebrated metal outfit Voice of Baceprot, often abbreviated as VOB, is gearing up to play at the Glastonbury Festival in England this Friday, making them the first Indonesian musicians to perform at one of the largest and most prestigious music festivals in the world.

VOB, a trio of hijab-wearing women from Garut, West Java, was formed in 2014 and rose to prominence on the local and international music scenes after early shows and cover songs drew the attention of rock legends such as Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Following a string of hit songs including “God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music”, VOB has since been invited to play on stages across Asia, Europe and the United States.

But this Friday’s stage at Glastonbury will be the band’s biggest yet as they will perform in the same space as English pop-rock band Coldplay as well as pop stars Dua Lipa and SZA. The band has secured a main stage performance at the Woodsies area and will play before the likes of Jamie XX and Kim Gordon.

“We’re of course very proud and excited to be able to play in this festival,” VOB frontwoman Firda “Marsya” Kurnia told reporters at a press briefing on June 21.

The band shared that they received the invitation back in March through an email account managed by their bassist Widi Rahmawati, as the trio has become independent since last year and “takes care of everything” by themselves.
