Journalist association slams journalist doxing over Israel-Indonesia trade report

The Jakarta chapter of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI Jakarta) has condemned a social media influencer who doxed the personal information of a Bisnis Indoensia journalist who wrote a report on the increased trade value between Indonesia and Israel, while calling for the public to file all press-related complaints to the Press Council.

T

he Jakarta chapter of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI Jakarta) has condemned the doxing of a journalist reporting data on increased import of Israeli goods to Indonesia by a social media influencer, who accused the report as fake news and encouraged his followers to vilify the reporter.

On Tuesday, digital influencer Erlangga Greschinov uploaded on his Instagram account a screenshot of an article written in Bisnis Indonesia by journalist Ni Luh Anggela, which reported a 1,204 percent increase in Indonesia’s imports from Israel. The article cited Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data in May this year that indicated soaring imports of Israeli machinery and mechanical equipment, electronics and organic chemicals.

While sharing the article with his 100,000 followers on Instagram, Erlangga claimed that the cited data was not available on the BPS website.

He also linked Anggela’s LinkedIn profile on the photo caption, seeking clarification and saying: “if [the journalist] was proven to have fabricated [the data], she must be fired or resign from her job.”

The BPS website, as accessed by The Jakarta Post on Thursday afternoon, showed Indonesia’s import value from Israel until April of this year. However, the statistics agency usually updates its website at the end of each month, and it is possible for journalists to request the latest data directly from BPS.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, AJI Jakarta deplored the doxing, asserting that press-related complaints must be lodged through existing legal mechanisms like the Press Council.
