P

olitical parties backing president-elect Prabowo Subianto have yet to come together to support former West Java governor Ridwan Kamil in the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial race, although discussions to forge a united front to back pro-government candidate pairs to run in the November elections are ongoing.

Members of the Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM), the electoral alliance behind winning presidential election pair Prabowo-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, have been working to form a united front, particularly in the country’s most populous provinces including Jakarta.

However, complications appeared to have emerged among pro-Prabowo parties in talks over who should run in the Jakarta race, where their candidate will potentially face unsuccessful presidential candidate and former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan.

Anies has recently been endorsed by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which secured the most votes in Jakarta during the February legislative election.

Three KIM members—Gerindra, the Democratic Party and the National Mandate Party (PAN) —have expressed their intention to nominate Golkar politician Ridwan Kamil for the Jakarta election. Golkar, as the largest party in the alliance, has insisted that Ridwan run for reelection in West Java instead.
