Released early in 2020 and now 23, Saka is seeking to have his guilty verdict overturned by the Cirebon State Court, insisting he was innocent and that he had been tortured by police to confess to the crime.
man convicted in a high-profile case over a double murder that occurred in 2016 in Cirebon, West Java, has petitioned for a judicial review of his guilty verdict amid growing public doubt over the police investigation.
Saka Tatal was among the eight defendants found guilty of murdering teenage couple Vina Dewi Arsita and Muhammad Rizky “Eky” Rudiana, both 16 years old, on Aug. 27, 2016.
The case has seen a resurgence of nationwide attention after the recent theatrical release of a movie based on the gang rape and murder.
While the other defendants were sentenced to life in prison in 2017, Saka was given a sentence of just eight years because he was a minor when the crime took place.
Released early in 2020 and now 23, Saka is seeking to have his guilty verdict overturned by the Cirebon State Court, insisting he was innocent and that he had been tortured by police to confess to the crime.
"Every day I was beaten, kicked, electrocuted. Every mealtime, they threw the food at my feet," Saka said on Monday after filing his petition, as quoted by Kompas.id.
