Banners touting gubernatorial hopefuls are going up across South Sumatra as the countdown ticks ever closer to the one-month mark until candidate registration opens for the 2024 regional head elections.
With just a little over a month to go until candidate registration opens for the 2024 regional head elections, banners promoting potential candidates for South Sumatra governor have started going up across the province.
Among them is Herman Deru, a NasDem Party politician and former South Sumatra governor from 2018 to 2023 who plans to make his reelection bid for a second term alongside Democratic Party politician Cik Ujang as his deputy.
The pair has the formal backing of both NasDem and the Democrats as well as the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which together won 25 out of 75 total seats in the South Sumatra Legislative Council (DPRD) in the general election on Feb. 14.
The Golkar Party secured the highest number of seats with 12, followed closely by the Gerindra Party in second place with 11 and NasDem in third with 10 seats, while the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) came fourth with nine seats.
The remaining seats were distributed among Democratic Party with eight seats, the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the PKS with seven each, the National Mandate Party (PAN) with six seats, the United Development Party (PPP) with two, and Nusantara Awakening Party (PKN), Hanura Party and the United Indonesia Party (Perindo) with one seat each.
NasDem formally announced the Herman-Ujang pair as its gubernatorial ticket for the province on June 6, followed by the Democrats and the PKS making their announcements on June 11.
Mawardi Yahya, a Gerindra politician who served as deputy governor to Herman, and South Sumatra DPRD Speaker Anita Noeringhati from Golkar have also paired up as gubernatorial hopefuls.
