embers of the House of Representatives are planning to ask the Judicial Commission and the Supreme Court to investigate three judges at the Surabaya District Court in East Java over the controversial acquittal of the son of a lawmaker accused of killing his girlfriend last year.

The defendant was 31-year-old Gregorius Ronald Tannur, the son of lawmaker Edward Tannur of the National Awakening Party (PKB).

Ronald was arrested in October of last year for allegedly assaulting 29-year-old Dini Sera Afrianti and running her over with his car, killing her.

Ronald was acquitted from all charges last week, sparking massive backlash from the public, with dozens of people staging protests in front of the Surabaya District Court in the past few days.

Following public outrage, members of House Commission III overseeing legal affairs summoned Dini’s family and their lawyer Dimas Yemahura to a hearing on Monday about what happened at the district court.

In the hearing, the lawyer presented what his side described as incriminating evidence against Ronald that was seemingly ignored by the judges, including an autopsy report showing that she died because of massive internal bleeding and a rupture to her liver caused by blunt force trauma. The lawyer also showed photos of bruises on the skin on Dini’s upper arm that were consistent with tire imprints.

House deputy speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of the Gerindra Party who attended the House meeting said the acquittal "did not make any sense" and seemed to ignore the autopsy report.
