ix convicts in the 2016-double murder of young couple Vina Dewi Arsita and Muhammad Rizky “Eky” Rudiana in Cirebon, West Java, have filed for judicial review of their guilty verdicts and life sentences as the case continues to grab public attention amid growing concerns over police mishandling.

A team of 75 lawyers from the central board of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) represented the six convicts in handing over the judicial review documents to the Cirebon District Court on Wednesday.

The convicts, Rivaldi Aditya Wardana, Eko Ramadhani, Hadi Saputra, Jaya, Eka Sandi and Supriyanto, along with two others–a man named Sudirman and a then-minor named Saka Tatal–were the eight defendants found guilty of murdering Vina and Eky, both 16 years old at the time of the incident, on Aug. 27, 2016.

Aside from Saka, all seven convicts were given life sentences in 2017. However, three other suspects, including a man named Pegi, had remained at large until the case regained public attention following the release in May of a movie surrounding the murder.

Peradi spokesman Jutek Bongso told reporters at the Cirebon district court that the judicial reviews were based on new evidence, which includes the alleged false testimonies made by two people who claimed to be witnesses, Dede Riswanto and Liga Akbar.
