The commission has found evidence that the judges violated the code of ethics for acquitting Gregorius Ronald Tannur, a defendant accused of killing his girlfriend in East Java, following a probe into the trial and the case.

The Judicial Commission recommended that the Supreme Court hand out severe sanctions of dismissal to three judges who acquitted Gregorius Ronald Tannur, a defendant in a case involving the murder of his girlfriend in East Java.

Ronald, the son of retired lawmaker Edward Tannur of the National Awakening Party (PKB), was arrested in October of last year for allegedly assaulting and killing his 29-year-old girlfriend Dini Sera Afrianti.

But he was acquitted from all charges in July by three judges presiding over his case at the Surabaya District Court, namely Erintuah Damanik, Mangapul and Hery Hanindyo. The ruling sparked public backlash and prompted lawmakers to call on the Judicial Commission, an external judicial oversight body, to launch an investigation into the case.

During a meeting on Monday with members of the House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs, Judicial Commissioner Joko Sasmito said that his ranks had found indications that the three judges committed ethical violations in acquitting Ronald of all charges.

The conclusion, made during a plenary meeting on Monday, was reached after the commission questioned the three judges about the alleged violation of the ethics code.

The commission recommended “heavy sanctions for the judges of permanent dismissal with pension rights,” Joko said during the meeting, according to a statement on Monday.
