A district court in South Konawe has released an elementary school teacher accused of hitting the child of a local police officer from a women's prison, where she had been detained for a week.
he Andoolo District Court in South Konawe, South Sulawesi, ruled on Wednesday to suspend the detention of Supriyani, a 36-year-old contract teacher who has been accused of assaulting one of her first grade students at SDN 4 Baito state elementary school, the child of a local police officer.
Andri Darmawan, Supriyani’s legal counsel, said the report on the incident contained several discrepancies, including the time and place when the alleged assault occurred.
“The [report] said the incident happened at 10 a.m. [on April 24], but by that time there were no first graders at the school,” he said on Tuesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
“I never hit the child. I was told by the police investigators to just admit [that I did],” Supriyani told reporters upon her release from Kendari Women’s Penitentiary in the provincial capital, where she had been detained since Oct. 16.
The student’s parents reportedly demanded the teacher to pay them Rp 50 million (US$3,200) to drop the case.
South Konawe Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Febry Sam said the alleged incident happened at the school on April 24 while Supriyani was trying to discipline the child.
“The victim was playing, and then the suspect came to discipline the victim, leading to the abuse [sic],” Febry said on Monday.
