The national weather agency has advised people to prepare for extreme heat in certain regions and extreme rain in others, at least until the weekend, as unusually high temperatures continue to prevail as the country transitions into the rainy season.
he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has advised public vigilance over potential extreme weather events in the next few days in various regions, in particular high temperatures and heavy rainfall.
Excessive heat of temperatures up to 38.4 degrees Celsius are forecast for southern regions, including Majalengka in West Java, Semarang in Central Java and Bima in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
BMKG records show the worst-hit region in recent days is Larantuka district in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which saw temperatures reach above 37 degrees from Sunday to Monday.
October is one of the two hottest months of the year for southern equatorial regions, the other month being April, when the Sun is directly above the equator.
But the recent extreme heat “was exacerbated by the fact that most of these areas have not seen any rainfall for almost three months”, said BMKG meteorology deputy Guswanto, as quoted by kompas.id.
The national weather agency also noted that the country had been experiencing higher-than-usual temperatures this year at an monthly increase averaging between 0.4 and 1 degree compared to the past three decades.
