he National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has warned of potential flooding and landslides in November and December, as many parts of the country are entering a wetter rainy season caused by the La Niña weather phenomenon.
La Niña tends to bring a wetter rainy season and triggers heavy rainfall in Indonesia, causing floods, landslides, high winds and extreme waves.
As of Nov. 16, the BNPB had recorded more than 1,000 instances of flooding and landslides.
The disaster agency called on regional administrations to improve their preparedness for hydrometeorological disasters.
“Let’s prepare better for potential disaster,” BNPB head Suharyanto said on Monday, following a meeting at the Home Ministry to scale up disaster mitigation.
Suharyanto urged regional administrations to develop their ability to quickly respond to disasters and determine their scale.
“We also hope that cities, municipalities and provinces will be ready with their own disaster risk mapping. Having such a database can help enhance disaster mitigation,” he added.
