The campaign team of the Sampang regent candidate pair whose volunteer was killed said the assault was politically motivated, but the police have said it is too early to make such a conclusion.
The East Java Police arrested a suspect in the killing of a campaign volunteer of a regent candidate in Sampang on Madura Island, with the candidate’s campaign team saying the assault was politically motivated ahead of the simultaneous regional election.
The suspect, identified by his initials FS, is currently detained at the East Java Police headquarters in Surabaya.
“Hopefully, after the arrest of this suspect, we can name other suspects,” East Java Police Chief Insp. Gen. Imam Sugianto said in Sampang on Monday, as quoted by Antara.
He added that the investigation into the assault was taken over by the provincial police, so the Sampang Police could focus its resources on safeguarding the upcoming regional election.
The victim, identified as Jimmy Sugito Putra, was a campaign volunteer for Sampang regent candidate Slamet Junaidi, who is running on the ticket of NasDem Party. He is running with Muslim cleric Ahmad Mahfuz.
Jimmy was attacked near his home after the candidate pair visited a religious figure in Ketapak Laok village, where most residents are known to be supporters of rival candidate pair Golkar Party politician Muhammad Bin Mu’afi Zaini and United Development Party (PPP) member Abdullah hidayat.
After Slamet and Ahmad visited Ketapang Laok, dozens of people showed up carrying sickles and tried to prevent them from leaving the village.
