A school representative doubted police allegations that the victim was a gang member while a security guard near the brawl location denied a brawl took place.
police officer in Semarang, Central Java, reportedly shot and killed a student from State Vocational High School (SMKN) 4 Semarang, allegedly for involvement in a brawl on Sunday early morning.
The victim was rushed to a hospital for treatment but passed away because of the severity of his injury.
Semarang City Police chief Sr. Comr. Irwan Anwar said that the victim, identified as GRO, 16, was allegedly a gang member involved in a brawl with another gang.
The brawl broke out in front of the Paramount housing complex in West Semarang early Sunday morning at around 1:00 a.m.
An officer from the Semarang City Police, who was returning home from duty on a motorcycle, passed by the scene and encountered a gang fight.
The officer tried to break up the fight but came under attack, instead.
"As the officer passed by and saw the brawl, he tried to intervene. However, he was attacked, prompting him to take stern action," Irwan said at the Semarang City Police Headquarters on Monday evening, as quoted by tribunnews.com.
