he government is working to ensure smooth and safe travel for the Christmas and New Year holidays, during which millions of people are expected to hit the road and flock to popular tourism destinations.
The Transportation Ministry estimates that some 110 million people, or 39 percent of the country’s population, will travel during the year-end holidays. The estimate is about the same as it was last year, when 107 million people were expected to travel.
“The government aims to ensure that basic transportation infrastructure, including toll roads and other main thoroughfares, works well during the year-end holiday season,” Coordinating Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said on Tuesday.
To ease gridlock along the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, the main route for cars leaving the capital, authorities have added an extra lane on each side of the road on certain stretches.
The Jakarta-Cikampek is among the busiest sections of the Trans-Java toll road network, the transportation backbone of the country’s most populous island, connecting Banten to East Java.
Authorities are also preparing traffic policies to be put in place on Java’s main toll roads. The implementation is flexible and will depend on the traffic conditions.
“We will monitor the traffic and see whether we need to improve the traffic there,” Agus said.
