T

he Naval Military Police have charged two officers with premeditated murder in the fatal shooting earlier this month of a 48-year-old owner of a car rental business in Tangerang, Banten.

Chief military prosecutor Col. Kum Riswandono Hariyadi said the two officers, identified as First Sgt. AA and First Sgt. RH, would be charged with violating Article 340 on premeditated murder in the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum death penalty or life sentence.

In addition to the charge of premeditated murder, he said both AA and RH would be charged with criminal distribution of stolen goods, or “fencing”.

"Another [sailor], Chief Seaman BA, who was present at the scene of the shooting, will be charged with fencing stolen goods," Kum said on Wednesday, as quoted by Tempo.co.

The incident unfolded when civilian suspect AS rented a car from the victim – identified only as IA – using a fake identity card with the alleged intention of stealing and selling the car.

AS eventually struck a deal with AA to purchase the stolen car for Rp 40 million (US$2,477), although it remains unclear if the naval officer knew that the vehicle was stolen.

IA grew suspicious that a theft was underway when two of the vehicle’s three GPS trackers went offline. The third was still active, so he was able to track the vehicle to a rest stop at Kilometer Marker 45 on the Tangerang-Merak Toll Road.
