Heavy rains and strong winds that could trigger high waves are forecast to take place around Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) until Feb. 3.
Authorities warned holidaymakers and local residents in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to be cautious of extreme weather conditions that are expected to occur until early next week.
“We urge fishermen, tourist operators and people traveling around the waters of West Manggarai regency to exercise caution against heavy rain and strong winds, which may trigger higher waves and strong currents,” said Maria Serran, the head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency’s (BMKG) meteorology station in West Manggarai, on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The meteorology station forecasts that extreme weather events ranging including thunderstorms and strong winds will take place until Monday in several districts known as popular tourist destinations, such as Komodo, Boleng, Lembor and South Lembo.
The agency also urged the public to anticipate potential impacts from the extreme weather, such as flooding and landslides that can potentially damage houses and other public facilities.
Maria urged the public and tourists to “always follow the guidance of port authorities and relevant agencies” on top of following updated information from authorities on local weather conditions.
Labuan Bajo is a port town in the western tip of Flores Island in NTT. The port is considered the main gateway to Komodo Island, famous for its Komodo dragon and various underwater attractions.
In response to the extreme weather warning, the Labuan Bajo Seaport Authority issued on Thursday a notice to ships sailing in waters around Labuan Bajo and Komodo Island to remain alert for high waves and strong winds until next Monday.
In its notice, the port authority urges ships to abort sailing and remain docked in extreme weather conditions, as reported by tribunnews.com.
