housands of students across various regions staged protests after their schools failed to submit the required paperwork for the Achievement-Based National Selection (SNBP) program, effectively preventing them from securing spots at state universities.
SNBP is one of three admission routes to state universities, allowing high-achieving students to enroll based solely on their high school academic results, without the need for any exams.
The Higher Education, Science and Technology Ministry gave schools from Jan. 6 to 31 to upload academic transcripts for students eligible for SNBP admission, but over 370 schools failed to submit the required paperwork by the deadline.
Schools attributed their failure to technical issues, inadequate infrastructure and even natural disasters.
Hundreds of students at MAN 2 Medan Islamic High School in North Sumatra, where approximately 320 eligible students were unable to enroll in state universities through the SNBP route, staged a rally at the school on Friday.
They demanded accountability for what they called the school's "negligence" in handling their paperwork.
The deputy headmaster of MAN 2 Medan, Ahmad Barden Siregar, has attributed the university’s admissions failure to technical issues with the higher education ministry's website.
