ix officers of the Tarakan Police in North Kalimantan were injured after a group of Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel launched an attack on the police station just before midnight on Monday, adding to a growing list of clashes between the police and the military.

North Kalimantan Police Chief Insp. Gen. Hary Sudwijanto said that the injured officers, all of whom are stationed at the Tarakan Police's Integrated Service Center, had been taken to Yusuf S.A. Regional General Hospital for treatment.

"The situation in Tarakan has since returned to normal and the North Kalimantan Police along with the Mulawarman Military Command are working together to investigate the incident," he stated on Tuesday, as reported by Kompas.

Col. Cav. Kristiyanto, spokesperson for the Mulawarman Military Command, which oversees North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), explained that the incident was triggered by the alleged assault of a soldier from the Infantry Battalion (Yonif) 614/RJP.

"The soldier was beaten by five officers from the Tarakan Police on Saturday. The perpetrators had promised to pay the victim Rp 10 million (US$610.87) for medical treatment, but repeatedly delayed the payment." Kristiyanto said on Sunday.

He added that in response to the incident, around 20 members of Yonif 614/RJP went to the Tarakan Police on Monday to search for the five officers responsible for assaulting their fellow soldier, which eventually escalated into violence.
