est Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi urged state-owned plantation firm PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) to stop land conversion in Puncak, a popular tourism destination in Bogor regency, West Java.

Dedi said on Monday that the overflowing Jayanti River in Cisarua district, Bogor regency, was an oddity, adding that he did not know why the river was overflowing, but mentioning that PTPN should stop converting land, as quoted by Kompas.

“I have requested PTPN to stop all forms of land conversion in Puncak,” Dedi said on his Instagram account @dedimulyadi71.

“Our data shows that more than 1,000 hectares of land have been converted. Don’t focus only on economic interests.”

Dedi said that tea plants have been planted in the Puncak area since the Dutch colonial era, not only for economical purposes but also as part of environmental conservation and protection efforts.

He emphasized that environmental sustainability had to become the main priority, over short-term economic gains.
