Mashudi revealed that the conditions at the Kutacane correctional facility were dire, with overcrowding pushing the prison to operate at 300 percent capacity. Designed to hold just 85 inmates, the facility was home to nearly 370 before the jailbreak.
he Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services has revealed plans to construct a new penitentiary in Southeast Aceh following the escape of around 50 inmates from the Kutacane correctional facility on Monday.
Mashudi, the ministry's Director General of Correctional Services, said that the Southeast Aceh administration has allocated a 4.1-hectare plot of land for the new facility, aimed at alleviating the overcrowding issues at Kutacane Prison.
"We will begin construction of the new correctional facility on the land donated by the Southeast Aceh administration as soon as possible," Mashudi said on Wednesday, as reported by Antara.
Mashudi revealed that the conditions at the Kutacane correctional facility were dire, with overcrowding pushing the prison to operate at 300 percent capacity. Designed to hold just 85 inmates, the facility was home to nearly 370 before the jailbreak.
"Inmates are forced to sleep packed together, with some even sleeping in tents inside the facility," he said, as quoted by Kompas.
Mashudi noted that nearly all correctional facilities in Aceh province are severely overcrowded. The Bireun penitentiary in Bireun regency is operating at 300 percent of its intended capacity, while the Kuala Simpang penitentiary in Aceh Tamiang regency is at 200 percent. The Banda Aceh penitentiary in Aceh Besar regency is functioning at 150 percent of its capacity.
The situation at the Idi penitentiary in East Aceh regency is particularly alarming. The facility is currently holding 438 inmates despite only being designed to house 63, meaning it is operating at 600 percent of its intended capacity.
