Police in Bal's western regency of Jembrana have foiled yet another attempt to smuggle green sea turtles, rescuing two males and three females of the protected marine species.
embrana Police have rescued several green sea turtles from an attempt to smuggle the endangered marine animals in Bali’s western regency.
“We managed to secure a total of five sea turtles. We are still chasing the perpetrator, whose identity is already known to us,” Jembrana Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Endang Tri Purwanto said on Saturday in the regency capital Negara, as quoted by Antara News.
Tri said officers from Jembrana’s water police unit received a tip-off on Friday about an attempt to smuggle sea turtles through Gilimanuk subdistrict, Melaya district.
Gilimanuk is one of the main entry points to Bali via ferry services to and from Banyuwangi, East Java.
Police then conducted a sweep focusing on Gilimanuk Bay, and found an individual engaging in suspicious activity.
“This person was hauling a cart with a motorcycle, but ran away when officers approached, [abandoning] the motorcycle and cart,” said Tri.
Officers discovered three green sea turtles in the cart, verifying the tip about the smuggling attempt, and located two other turtles on the beach after a further search of the vicinity.
