As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are more widely used in modern warfare, state-owned aerospace firm PT Dirgantara Indonesia is working to improve its own UAV products, the Wulung and Elang Hitam, which are in different stages of development.
tate-owned aerospace firm PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) recently conducted a demo flight of its Wulung unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to prepare for its commercialization and to show its improved capabilities.
The demo flight was held last week in front of several stakeholders and potential customers of the Wulung UAV at Suparlan Airport in Batujajar, West Bandung regency, West Java, PTDI said in a press release.
Attending the demo flight were Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) chief Vice Adm. Irvansyah, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) deputy chief Vice Adm. (ret) Amarulla Oktavian, PTDI production director Dena Hendriana and officials from the Defense Ministry, Maritime Affairs and Fishery Ministry, the Defense Industry Policy Committee (KKIP) and the Navy.
“The Wulung is suitable for operations in Navy or Bakamla bases,” Amarulla said, as quoted in the press release.
“Technically, Wulung can meet the tactical needs of maritime security patrols from the air. We can later combine Wulung with patrol vessels at sea.”
Bakamla chief Irvansyah also expressed his satisfaction after the demo flight, saying he would assess the use of the Wulung UAV for Bakamla.
PTDI developed the Wulung in 2014 as a drone for intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR) missions in cooperation with the then Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and the Defense Ministry’s Research and Development Agency.
