Floods hit Grobogan and Demak for sixth consecutive day

This ongoing flooding marks the third major flood caused by river embankment breaches in Grobogan regency. A similar disaster occurred on Jan. 20 when the embankment in Tutang village, Baturagung, failed, followed by another on March 8, when torrential rains caused embankments to breach at three separate locations.

idespread flooding has submerged thousands of homes in Grobogan and neighboring Demak regency in Central Java over the past six days, triggered by multiple breaches in river embankments in both regions last week.

A torrential downpour that hit Grobogan regency on May 16 caused the Renggong and Klitek rivers to overflow, damaging a 20-meter section of the river embankment in Sukorejo village, Tegowano district, the next day.

Floodwaters, ranging from 50 cm to 150 cm, inundated 12 villages across five districts, including Sukorejo, Tanggirejo, Medani, Sugihmanik, Tungu, Latak and Manggarmas.

The disaster affected 1,200 people and forced 255 of them to seek refuge in temporary shelters. As of Thursday morning, approximately 200 evacuees remained in the shelters.

A similar disaster occurred on Jan. 20 when the embankment in Tutang village, Baturagung, failed, followed by another on March 8, when torrential rains caused embankments to breach at three separate locations.

During a visit to assess the flooding in Tanggirejo village on Wednesday, West Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin Maimoen stressed the importance of a comprehensive strategy to address the region's recurring floods.
