Environmental organizations have declared an “ecological emergency” following a recent mass fish die-off in the Surabaya River, in East Java, which they believe was caused by severe pollution in the 14-kilometer-long river.
Alaika Rahmatullah, a researcher at Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation (ECOTON), said the organization conducted a water quality analysis in the Surabaya River following the mass fish die-off and found alarmingly low levels of dissolved oxygen.
“The dissolved oxygen level was just 0.1 milligrams per liter, which means the water can no longer support aquatic life,” she said on Wednesday.
