The annual summit, held on Saturday at the Djakarta Theater in Menteng, Central Jakarta, concluded with a joint statement urging the government to adopt more ambitious emissions targets in response to the worsening climate emergency.
“We call on and propose that all levels of the Indonesian government set more ambitious, science-based climate targets aligned with the 1.5°C goal [...] and a national emission target of 6 percent by 2030,” the statement read, referring to the global temperature ceiling outlined in the Paris Agreement.
The statement also welcomed President Prabowo Subianto’s pledge to transition Indonesia to 100 percent renewable energy within the next decade, as well as his confidence that the country can achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
However, the statement also called on the government to set stronger climate strategy and commitments through the upcoming Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 document, which is to be submitted this year under the Paris framework.
