View all search resultsThe Central Java provincial administration is building floating houses for families affected by tidal floods in Sayung district.
esidents living along the Northern Coast (Pantura) area in Central Java have suffered from tidal flooding, with their houses inundated as the floods get higher every time.
“I have lived 12 years with the coastal flooding. I have raised my house every year,” said Muslim, a villager in Timbulsloko village, Sayung district, Demak regency.
“But still it is inundated. So, it is no longer feasible for it to be inhabited.”
Muslim lives with his wife and three children and he is not sure how to face the natural challenges. Many houses in the village are inundated by the tidal floods. Some are fully submerged and uninhabitable.
Luckily for Muslim and other villagers, the Central Java provincial administration has started to provide aid.
Villagers who do not have plots of land outside the village have received 36-square-meter floating houses.
Instead of a foundation, each floating house is built on top of several plastic barrels which function as buoys. This allows the houses to move with the water level.
