View all search resultsA legislator in Batam, Riau Islands, has questioned the legal basis of the local police action in lowering the 'One Piece' flag from a resident's home in Sekupang.
resident Prabowo Subianto does not mind communities flying the One Piece pirate flag as an expression of creativity, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said at the Presidential Palace compound on Tuesday.
“If it’s part of expression, it’s okay, no problem. But don’t [...] clash it, or compare it or [use it to] dispute the Red-and-White flag,” he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
“It shouldn’t be like that. The Red-and-White flag is our only flag as children of the nation.”
Flying the Jolly Roger pirate flag from the Japanese manga series One Piece ahead of Independence Day has become a growing trend among the public.
The flags, which feature a cartoon skull and crossbones wearing a yellow straw hat, have been seen flying in various locations, including homes and vehicles, while some social media users have taken to using the flag as their profile picture.

Prasetyo stated that flying the Jolly Roger flag as a form of expression is legal in the space of communal creativity. However, he reminded that no party should use the moment incorrectly, especially in the month of August, in which the nation celebrates Indonesian Independence Day.
