T

he price of aviation fuel (avtur) at Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, is the most expensive in Indonesia and has forced airlines to refuel in Malaysia, North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution claimed on Monday.

Bobby said the avtur price at Kualanamu airport was Rp 14,000 (86 US cents) per liter while at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng, Banten, the price is only Rp 12,000.

The avtur price in Malaysia is much lower at between Rp 9,000 and Rp 10,000.

He claimed the avtur at Kualanamu airport was currently the most expensive in Indonesia, which led to high airfares to Kualanamu from all destinations.

He added that some airlines were forced to shift their refueling process to Malaysia because it was cheaper there.

“I don’t have to name the airlines, but they are private airlines. They fly to Penang or Kuala Lumpur, fill their tanks and then fly back again to Kualanamu and Jakarta,” Bobby said at the governor’s official residence in Medan on Monday.
