Bali officials are under a spotlight after allegedly issuing racist statements regarding protesters who held a rally on the island on Aug. 30.
“We strongly condemn the racist statements of public officials in Bali that divide society, and urge officials and public figures to end discriminatory practices and stigmatization of protesters,” Nyoman Mardika, from Forum Warga Setara (ForWaras), in a press conference on Sept. 2, as a response to the racist statements.
The racist statement was made by Bali Governor Wayan Koster when meeting representatives of motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver groups in the governor’s official residence in Denpasar, on Saturday night.
“I received information that out of 25 people [protesters] detained, only three have Bali identity cards,” Koster said in a statement send to the media on Aug. 31.
