T

he Central Java Police have named 56 minors suspects in connection with a wave of violent anti-government protests that erupted across the province from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 which resulted in the burning of several government buildings and police facilities.

Central Java Deputy Police Chief Brig. Gen. Latif Usman said authorities arrested a total of 2,263 individuals during the unrest, of whom 1,391 were minors.

“Following further investigation, we have officially named 118 people suspects, including 56 minors. The remainder have been released but are mandated to regularly report to authorities,” Latif said at a press conference on Friday.

He said the suspects allegedly threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at law enforcement officers and public facilities during the unrest.

Latif emphasized that law enforcement efforts were directed solely at rioters who engaged in violence and destruction during the protests, adding that “peaceful demonstrators were not arrested.”

He added that all underage suspects will be processed under Indonesia’s Child Protection Law, while adult suspects will be charged under Article 214 of the Criminal Code, which concerns resistance and assault against public officials. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.
