plan by the Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) to conduct a total renovation of the Batam Haj Dormitory at Batam Center in Batam, Riau Islands, may disrupt organizing of the haj pilgrimage from the province in 2026.
The renovation is needed because the buildings need overall repair, but it may disrupt Batam’s role as one of the 13 haj embarkation points in Indonesia.
BP Batam’s head of general affairs bureau, Mohammad Taofan, confirmed the plan.
“Internally, we want to immediately renovate the haj dormitory because it is time for total maintenance,” he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Taofan, however, could not say when the renovation would be complete, including a plan to convert the haj dormitory into a commercial hotel.
Batam Haj Dormitory is an asset of BP Batam, which is used every year to house haj pilgrims before they are flown to Saudi Arabia from Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport.
Commenting on the renovation plan, an expert staff from the newly created Haj and Umrah Ministry, Abdul Rahman Syahputra Batubara, said the ministry did not mind the plan to upgrade the building as long as it did not disrupt haj pilgrimage operations.
