View all search resultsWednesday’s fire was the second in just over two years as Dumai Refinery suffered from a fire in April 2023, which was caused by hydrogen leakage.
tate-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina guarantees that operations were not disrupted at its refinery unit in Dumai, Riau, following a fire on Wednesday evening.
The fire, however, highlighted low safety level at Pertamina’s facilities following multiple fires and accidents in the past few years.
The fire started at about 9 p.m. at Dumai Refinery, owned by Pertamina’s refinery and petrochemical sub-holding, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) and firefighters managed to control the fire at about 11:30 p.m.
“We have eight fire trucks from Pertamin Dumai Refinery, one from Dumai Fire Agency and one from Pertamina Patra Niaga Northern Sumatra Region,” Dumai Refinery area manager for communication, relations and CSR, Agustiawan, said on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
A blast was heard during the fire and could be heard some two kilometers away. The blast caused residents living near the refinery in Puteri Tujuh area to panic.
The main operation of the refinery is still taking place safely and the residents’ activities around the refinery are not disrupted.
An investigation procedure to find what caused the fire is ongoing to ensure better prevention measures in the future, he said.
