he Semarang District Court in Central Java has handed down relatively light sentences to three individuals found guilty of extorting Aulia Risma Lestari, a 30-year-old postgraduate medical resident at Diponegoro University whose suicide last year sparked national outrage and drew attention to systemic bullying within Indonesia’s medical education system.
The court sentenced Taufik Eko Nugroho, the former head of the university’s anesthesiology residency program, to three years in prison. Meanwhile, Sri Maryani, a former administrative staff member, and Zara Yupita Azra, a senior resident who supervised Aulia, each received nine-month prison sentences.
“The defendants have been found guilty of violating Article 368 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to aggravated extortion committed collectively and on a continuous basis,” presiding Judge Muhammad Djohan Arifin stated on Wednesday.
The sentences were lighter than what prosecutors had sought. The prosecution had demanded a three-year sentence for Taufik and 18 months each for Sri and Zara.
